How to work out fuel cost for a trip
The formula is simple: distance ÷ 100 × fuel use (L/100km) × price per litre. A 700 km return trip in a car using 7.5 L/100km at $1.95 a litre uses 52.5 litres and costs about $102 in fuel. Split two ways, that's about $51 each.
Finding your car's real fuel use
The official label figure is usually measured in lab conditions, so real-world use is often 10–20% higher. For an accurate number, fill the tank, reset the trip meter, drive normally, then fill up again and divide the litres you put in by the kilometres driven, times 100. Highway driving is usually more efficient than city driving, while towing, roof racks, heavy loads and high speeds all increase fuel use.
Tips to save fuel on a road trip
- Use a fuel price app to find cheaper servos. Prices can vary by 20–30 cents a litre in the same area.
- In many capital cities, fuel prices rise and fall in a regular cycle. Fill up near the bottom of the cycle.
- Keep your tyres at the recommended pressure, and remove roof racks when you're not using them.
- Drive at a steady speed. Going 110 km/h instead of 100 km/h can use noticeably more fuel.
Splitting costs fairly
Splitting fuel, tolls and parking evenly is the simplest approach. Some groups also add a small amount per kilometre for the driver's wear and tear. The ATO's cents-per-kilometre rate for work travel is a common reference point for that.
Frequently asked questions
How much fuel does an average car use in Australia?
Many medium cars use around 7–9 L/100km in mixed driving, SUVs often use 9–11 L/100km, and utes and 4WDs 10–13 L/100km. Check your own car's figure for the best estimate.
How do I calculate cost per kilometre?
Multiply fuel use by the price per litre and divide by 100. At 8 L/100km and $2.00 a litre, fuel costs 16 cents per kilometre.
Should passengers pay for fuel?
It's common for passengers to split fuel, tolls and parking evenly with the driver. The calculator divides the total by the number of people sharing, so enter everyone in the car including the driver.
